The printer market gradually opens up, and printer shipments resume growth

Regeneration Times Report/IDC released the Indonesian Printer Market Tracker Report for the third quarter of 2021. The Indonesian printer market shipped 330,000 units in this quarter, up 6% year-on-year, 6% month-on-month and 16.6% month-on-month.

In August 2021, the Indonesian government lowered the level of the epidemic prevention blockade from level 4 to level 3, and market demand has recovered. Meanwhile, the reopening of the local IT retail market has had a positive impact on the recovery in overall printer demand. Market demand increased in September, but suppliers were unable to maximize the opportunity due to inventory shortages. Beginning in the third quarter, suppliers officially raised printer prices as parts and shipping prices rose.

Epson maintained its dominant position in the market, with a market share of 54.8% and a year-on-year increase of 1.3% in shipments. But prices for the brand's devices have risen from August 2021 due to shortages of new printers and other parts. Ink cartridge products continued to be Epson's major volume contributor and recorded strong quarterly growth of 37.8%. The dot matrix printer was hit by digitalization, and shipments fell by 46.5% year-on-year.

Canon's market share was 23.4%, up 20.5% sequentially. Although the inkjet model fell by 18.4% year-on-year, it was still Canon's main sales model in the local market. Due to limited raw materials, Canon adopted a strategy of prioritizing the production of "star" products in the inkjet category to reduce the impact. In the laser segment, which includes copiers and MFPs, Canon achieved 59.5% year-over-year growth.

The third largest market share is HP with a market share of 15.0%. The brand's shipments of refillable high-capacity series increased by 156.0% year-on-year, while the shipments of ink cartridges equipment decreased by 48.3% year-on-year. The ink-filled high-capacity series offset the impact of the decline in ink cartridge products to a certain extent. In the laser field, HP maintained its original advantages, with a market share of 40.9%, a year-on-year increase of 18.3%.

For the Indonesian printer market in the third quarter of 2021, brands are still facing inventory shortages and delivery challenges, making it difficult to meet the sudden increase in market demand.
